Lesson 5 of 5

Using it honestly

Where it is fine, where it is not, and saying which is which.

Most of what people make with these tools is entirely fine. A picture for a birthday card, music under a video that would otherwise be silent, a voice reading a document aloud. The alternative was usually nothing at all.

Two things change that. One is making something that shows a real person doing or saying what they did not, which ranges from unkind to criminal depending on what happens next. The other is passing generated work off as something a person made, where somebody is deciding based on that.

What these tools learned from is still being argued over in court rather than settled, so anybody telling you confidently how it will land is guessing. For anything public or paid, read what the tool says about what it trained on and what rights you actually get.

  • Private and personal: enjoy yourself.
  • Never generate a real person doing what they did not do.
  • Say when something was generated, before somebody finds out.

DOT / THE TRANSLATOR

Saying it was generated costs you one line. Having somebody else point it out costs considerably more than that.

Try it

Look at something you have made or might make with one of these tools. Decide the one sentence you would use to say it was generated, and where that sentence would go.

Check: You used a picture tool for an image on your business website. What is the honest thing to do?

Nobody else can answer you, and you cannot answer anybody else. This is not a forum — we would rather say that than run a room we cannot watch at three in the morning.

Your question goes up with the answer and without your name. Nothing identifies you, ever.

If we cannot answer it we will tell you why, and that one stays between us.
