Lesson 4 of 5

Privacy at home

What never goes into a tool: names, schools, photos, other children.

Children's information deserves more protection, not less. Keep names, the school, photos, medical details and anything about other children out of general tools. Describe the situation instead: “a ten-year-old who finds spelling hard”.

Check the tool's minimum age and whether the child should be using it at all. Many services are not designed for children, and the terms say so.

If a child is using a tool, sit with them at first. Not to police, but to show how you check an answer and when you close the lid.

  • Describe, do not identify.
  • Check minimum ages.
  • Sit with them at first.

BEEP / THE MYTH-BUSTER

Names, schools, photos, other people’s children. None of it. Your child did not consent to being training data and cannot.

Try it

Write a one-sentence family rule a child could repeat back without rolling their eyes. Then test it on them, because they will tell you.

Check: You want help with a child's reading struggle. What is the safe description?

Ask about this page and we will answer it here, where the next person can read it too.

Nobody else can answer you, and you cannot answer anybody else. This is not a forum — we would rather say that than run a room we cannot watch at three in the morning.

Your question goes up with the answer and without your name. Nothing identifies you, ever.

If we cannot answer it we will tell you why, and that one stays between us.
